German Autobahn

The only network in the world with unlimited speed on many stretches. But it's not chaos — strict rules, "Rechtsfahrgebot" (keep right), and disciplined drivers make it safe even at 300 km/h.

• Green plates = low emission zones in cities
• Rest areas with "Autohof" for truckers & travellers
• Emergency lanes strictly enforced — no stopping

Swiss motorways

Perfectly maintained, incredibly scenic — and full of radar. Switzerland requires a vignette (sticker or digital 2026) for all vehicles on motorways. Speed limits: 120 km/h, but fines are among Europe's highest.

• Gotthard tunnel — 17 km long, often congested
• Digital vignette available from 2026 (number plate scan)
• Fines start at 20 CHF over limit, can exceed 1000 CHF
• San Bernardino, Simplon passes — open summer only

Austrian Alpine roads

Austria combines high-speed transits (130 km/h) with breathtaking alpine passes. Digital vignette (10-day, 2-month, annual) is mandatory. Special toll routes like Grossglockner are extra, but worth every euro.

• Brenner, Tauern, Pyhrn — major transit routes with tunnels
• Section control on many tunnels (average speed check)
• Environmental stickers not required (unlike Germany)
• Winter tires mandatory Nov–Apr on snowy roads
